Online slot developers, NET Entertainment, have announced they are developing and planning to launch a fully immersive, virtual reality video slot by the end of 2017/start of 2018 and the gambling community cannot wait. One of their most beloved titles, Gonzo’s Quest, will be the subject of the VR slot and it looks as though the technology has found its place in online gambling.
We’ve discussed the possibilities of Virtual Reality in the online casino market before and we certainly considered the idea unlikely to stick before this announcement. We thought the idea would be to re-create the entire casino – NET Entertainment took a step back and are focusing on a game before they consider anything larger; probably wise.
From the images we have seen, Gonzo’s Quest VR won’t be quite as space age as you’re maybe imagining but it represents a huge step forward for online gaming on the whole. The game itself is set to be given a totally 3D makeover and the player will be able to look around a Gonzo themed environment and even press the comically large spin button themselves.
NET Entertainment are really the first developers to come to the media with their proposed VR offering and, as such, will no doubt command much of the opening market despite how simplistic the game currently looks. Virtual Reality as a concept is still very new and we are unlikely to see the giant steps other technological advancements are making; more baby steps for now.
However, this truly opens the door to the idea of re-creating all of the online casino games for the Virtual Reality medium. Digital Poker tables will be realised, virtual Roulette wheels will be spun and you can gather where this is going I’m sure.
Do we think it’ll actually work and attract an audience? Initially yes. The game itself will attract a lot of attention for the rest of the year up until launch and people across the world will be eager to try it out for themselves but we can see the novelty wearing off quite quickly if we’re being completely honest.
If you think about the practicality of a Virtual Reality casino you start to understand our concerns. You couldn’t indulge in a quick fix on the train for example; totally immersing yourself and pushing forwards every now and then to spin the reels will no doubt garner some strange looks.
We’re impressed but not overwhelmed and we can wholly see the rest of the gambling community wondering why they wasted hundreds of pounds on a VR unit to play a slightly modified version of Gonzo’s Quest in a totally immersed setting.
